God breathed life into Elsie Mae Gray on January 26, 1946, in Nacogdoches, Texas and she breathed her last breath on January 30, 2017 in her home in Dallas, Texas. She was the fifth child of nine born to Ernest Mosby and Annie Lee Upshaw Mosby. The family has its’ roots in Nacogdoches, but they grew and blossomed in Dallas with many branches and leaves to ensure a lasting legacy.
Mae accepted Christ as her risen savior at a young age and she led a life reflecting God’s love in her actions and in the love she showed to others. Mae loved spending time with her family, laughing and playing card games well into the night. She had an especially close bond with her younger twin sisters Linda Bell and Brenda Hubbard, speaking on the phone daily and frequent visits to check up on one another. Her loving and nurturing spirit has been shared unselfishly as she played a hand in raising many of her grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by those youngsters who got to experience both her love and her discipline when the time called for it. She was an old-school parent and did not spare the rod, but she definitely spoiled them with old fashioned tender loving care!
Mae shared her life with Joe Nathan Smith for 40 years and together they raised the 5 energetic boys with a balance of love and discipline that bore the fruits of respect and honor that they were able to instill into their own children.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Annie Lee, sisters Gloria Ann and Jessie Faye and son Clifton Earl (Pig) Gray. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Joe Nathan Smith, sons Casey Gray (Yolanda), Kennedy Gray, Timothy Gray, Sr. (Charlotte), Fredrick Gray (Sharnae); siblings Nathan Mosby (Verla), Gene Earl Mosby (Mary Ann), James Mosby (Lou), Linda Bell (Ercy), Brenda Hubbard, and Ernest Mosby Jr.; grandchildren Miracle, Kentana, LaTesha, Kennedy Jr., Asha-Kanika , TaLesha, Tim Jr., Akin-Kamal, Casey, Christian, Tamanikia, Joy, Daisha, Dedric, Frederick, Jr. and Asia; great grandchildren Jatavion, Keria, Ty’reion, Gregory, Ayana, Isaiah, and Raheem. She also had a special bond with nieces and nephews Peanut (Charles Smith), Toya (LaToya Smith), Tonya Mosby Ponder, Pete (Harry Henry), Johnny and Gene Hubbard; and great-nieces and nephews Spooka (Terrence Graham), Ms. T (Teundra Mosby), Tyron Mosby, and Baby K (Keenon Ponder). She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
