The Life and Legacy of Ida Mae Graves-Burris
1931-2017
Prologue: On October 10, 1931, God in his infinite wisdom graced this earth with an angel, Ida Mae Rusk.
Chapter 1: Our mother, Ida was born to the parentage of the late Henry Rusk and Samantha Louise McKinney (Washington), in Marshall, Texas. She completed her formative years of education in Marshall, Texas, where she began and nurtured many lasting friendships. Our beloved mother knew the Lord early and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Her early acceptance of Christ served as the foundation for her gifts: willingness to serve and a passion for people.
Chapter 2: Our angel of love met and married our father, the first love of her life, Clifton Monroe Graves. To this beautiful union, God bestowed them with three loving children: Helen, Michael and Clifton. Our family was dedicated members of Puget Street Christian Church of Dallas, Texas. In the passing of Monroe Graves, our mother later married the second love of her life the late Pastor Albert Burris. Ida worked for Texas Instruments, Wonder Bread Bakery and several years as a private housekeeper. She was a resident of the North Park community for over 60 years.
Chapter 3: For many years, our mother served faithfully as the First Lady of Cedar Grove Church in Rockwall, Texas; as well as Canada Drive Christian Church of Dallas, Texas. In the continuance of her servitude years after the passing of the late Pastor Albert Burris, our mother became a faithful member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, where she served as a member on the Usher Ministry and beloved Goldie.
Chapter 4: On April 2, 2017, again, God in his infinite wisdom looked down upon this earth and saw that our mother was growing tired and weary. Therefore, surrounded by family and friends our Heavenly Father held her in the cradle of His arms and gently rocked her from labor to reward.
Epilogue: Our mother is now resting in the arms of the Lord, preceded by two brothers and a sister. No more sickness and no more pain. She is loved and remembered as: “Mama” to Helen Johnson, Michael Graves (Debra) and Clifton Graves; “Granny” to five grandchildren: Kevin Graves (LaTosha), LaShunda Graves, Simone Smith (Corey), Willie Johnson (Sandra) and Erica Butler (Alvin); and “GiGi” to ten great-grandchildren. Cherished memories also held by four sisters, one brother Dr. Warren Smith Jr. (Geraldine), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Church families and friends.
