Mattie Lee Durham was born May 5, 1944 under the parentage of Ruby Jones and Benjamin Johnson in Calvert, Texas. Mattie received her education through Marlin School District, two of those years 4th and 5th grade, they were in Germany before returning to Marlin where she received her high school diploma from Booker T. Washington High School in Marlin, Texas.
Mattie accepted Christ as her Savior at Marlin Baptist Church, later moving to Dallas, Texas joining Eastgate Baptist Church under Pastor Homer Reagan, where she was a dedicated usher. Later in age Mattie joined New Beginnings Covenant Ministries under Pastor Vincent Young, where she faithfully attended until she could physically no longer do so.
Mattie met and fell in love with Willard Durham, they were united in holy matrimony in 1964 and together they raised an only child, a baby girl named Jacqueline. She spent many years as an employee with Royal Optical, Western Electric now known as AT&T and Dillards.
In her leisure time she enjoyed playing tonk, bingo, fishing, cooking, listening to music, especially the O’Jays and Al Green singing out loud and dancing. She loved to have a good time seeing everyone smile. Most of all she loved being around family, she went to California every chance she got to visit her brothers and sisters, as well as flying free for 20 years on Southwest Airlines.
Mattie Lee Durham departed this life on May 11, 2019. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Clent and Ruby Jones, Benjamin and Birdie Johnson, grandmother; Mattie Brown, brother; Tyrone Johnson and two great grandchildren; Jacqueline Robinson and Jacob Jones.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her one and only child; Jacqueline Shackelford (Cliffton) of Dallas, three grandchildren; Shanequa Jones of Marlin, Brittny Jones, Bivin Flowers (Jessica) both of Dallas, 14 great grandchildren; Terrence Moore of Marlin, DeVonte’ Randle of Dallas, Amarria Moore of Marlin, Courtline Flowers, Courtnie Flowers, Corey Flowers, Dionte Flowers, Brianna Robinson, Seeara Flowers, Eric Flowers, Khylee Flowers, Kimbre Flowers, Jyia Flowers all of Dallas, 4 brothers and 8 sisters; Clent Jones Jr. of Dallas, Sheila Johnson of Seattle Washington, Michael Johnson (Marina), Damita Johnson (Wesley), Debra Johson (Derrick), Keith Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Regina Johnson, Michelle Johnson, Lela Johnson (Phil), Renee Marby (Greg), Diane Johnson all of California, a special friend, Booker Kidd as well as a host of family and friends.
