Penny Louise (Englin) McMullan passed away on Aug. 17, 2016, one month past her 69th birthday. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

We will all carry with us memories of her easy smile and bright outlook on life, which included a love of travel, taking the long way on every road trip (whether in a car, RV, or on a motorcycle), and spending time with her grandchildren (she was known for having popsicles in her freezer and was unmatched in her abilities to remove splinters and gently comb even the most tangled hair). She treasured her time working out with friends at Gold’s Gym, walks and lingering lunches at the beach with her husband, pedicures and shopping with her daughters, and cheering on her grandkids in whatever they were doing. She had little patience for cooking (Mrs. Smith’s pies were “homemade”) but wanted us all over anyway. She also made friends along her journey with breast cancer, always ready with an optimistic take on whatever life threw at her.

Penny was born in Rockford, Illinois, and spent her childhood on family farms in Illinois and Mississippi. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school and served at the U.S. Naval Air Station in San Diego, California, where she met husband, Bill (whom she called “Mac”). They moved to the Dallas area in 1968 and to Waxahachie 1976. In between her many stints as a stay-at-home mom, she worked at the Waxahachie Daily Light and later as a secretary at Hayes Chevrolet and at the Superconducting Super Collider.

Penny is survived by her husband, Bill, two daughters, Dawn McMullan and her husband Clyde Thompson, and Brandy Mayfield, and her five grandchildren: Jason Mayfield Jr., Noah Thompson, Rachyl Mayfield, Sawyer Thompson, and Katy Mayfield. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Kathleen Englin, and her niece and nephews, Kelly Tuminaro, Chad Englin, and Ronnie Lee Rich. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Frank Englin.

Graveside services will be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, Aug. 23, in honor of her service in the U.S. Navy, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the College Street Pub in downtown Waxahachie from 3-6 pm.

In lieu of flowers (which the National Cemetery can’t accommodate), donations can be sent to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which focuses in metastasis cancer research. Penny’s personal donation page can be found at http://bit.ly/2brMF2y.
