Rose Marie Wesson

Rose Marie Harris Wesson was born on June 3,1931 in St. Louis, Missouri and died on January 14, 2020 in Dallas, Texas.  Rose was the eldest daughter of Earl and Rose (Gillespie) Harris.  She married Garlen Wesson in October 1951 and had three children, Donald Everett, Garlen Dale, and Rosemarie Delores.

Rose was a proud graduate of Sumner High School, in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 1949.  She attended Stowe Teachers’ and McKendree Colleges, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education in 1967.  She continued her studies at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Edwardsville, Illinois, receiving her Master’s degree in Special Education in 1972.

Rose began her career as an elementary school teacher in the St. Louis Public Schools in 1967.  She continued teaching in various schools and school districts in both Missouri and Illinois and in 1979 traveled first to Panama and then Cuba to teach in Department of Defense Schools.  Upon her return to the States in 1987, she taught at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, as an Assistant Professor.  Rose retired from teaching in 1996 after working for six years as Principal of Madison High School, in Madison, Illinois.

Rose was an avid traveler and traveled to five of the seven continents, missing only Australia and Antarctica.  Rose climbed to the top of Machu Picchu in southern Peru; toured the Sphinx and rode camels at the Great Pyramids in Egypt; brought home beautiful lace from Brussels; and feasted on the many Chinese delicacies in Hong Kong.  She was a life-long learner and volunteered as an Ambassador for Roads Scholar (formerly Elderhostel), an educational travel program geared toward older adults.

She is survived by her son Donald and his wife Wanda (Dallas, Texas), her son Dale and his wife Lenita (Midlothian, Virginia), and her daughter Rosemarie (Larchmont, New York); six grandchildren, Donald, Galen, Ashley, Aaron, Bryan and Grace; nephews, Charles Earl, David and Tracy McIntosh; and several great nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sister, Delores McIntosh, grandson, David Wesson, and nephew, Darrell McIntosh.

Memorial gifts may be made to the White Rock Chapel Project, P.O. Box 192525, Dallas, TX, 75219.
